Kolkata Gate

The Hidco Board met last Wednesday and approved the design of a Kolkata Gate to be constructed by Hidco. This will be constructed at the third rotary traffic island, near Rabindra Tirtha / Hidco Bhavan.

The design was finalised by calling for submission of designs through a public notice in web sites as well as newspaper advertisements. A committee headed by Architect Dulal Mukherjee was formed which evaluated the designs from various architects from around the country. The design by M/s Vector Designs, a Pune-based architecture firm was recommended by the committee. A work order will soon be issued now that the design has been accepted by the Board of Directors of Hidco. I have asked Vector Designs to submit a time-table too so that we will know when the construction will start after going through the formalities of BOQ, RFQ, RFP, LOI etc.

Here is a picture of the design that was approved last week by Hidco Board:

  1. The plans of a gate is welcome but I request the authorities to take a holistic view of the overall look of New Town, I would like to point out to the creation of rampant eyesores by residents of high rises especially those maintained by Government agencies. The iron grills put up in all high rises windows and balcony has to be a standard design to give a aesthetic look and feel.
A simple notification from your end will suffice especially in Government complexes where building management and surveillance is lax.

  2. I second...at least for the structures visible from MAR and other major roads must have some guidance on design and color consistency. Soon it will be too late with constraints network getting complicated..

  3. Such a welcome gate would be better suited over the 1st rotary itself. This is becoming quite a very busy intersection and enough space should be left for provision of a couple of flyovers in the future - just like the ones being built over Parama island on EM bypass.
