Mechanical Sweeping to Start Soon

With project works going on at various corners of New Town, dust accumulation is becoming a menace in New Town. This afternoon, I held a meeting in NKDA with senior engineers of both Hidco and NKDA in an effort to find solutions. Arup Ghosh GM Hidco and Abin De EE NKDA went to the engineering wing of KMC to collect information. We've given ourselves seven days to formulate a strategy for using mechanical sweeping gadgets.

  1. Really glad to hear about bicycle lanes being planned in New town while Kolkata is moving in the opposite direction. The green corridors along the connector canal might be ideal for a bicycle lane. The south bank of Bagjola canal is another good candidate although there are encroachments right now. It also might be a good idea to set up bicycle lanes along the major arterial and sub-arterial roads, like BRT in Delhi - http://www.streetsblog.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/25/Delhi_BRT_Corridor.jpg

Mechanical sweeping is a welcome step to keep new town clean. But storage / dumping of construction materials like sand, stone-chips etc. right on the roads should be stopped also. The developers should be fined for this or made to clean up the mess / damage they are causing !

Request HIDCO team to visit Street no. 645, 622 Action Area 2B Lake Nucifera area as the cycling path around the road which is under construction would make place beautiful. In future the cycling race can also be organised and there are tremendous potential.
