Smart Trafic Signalling for New Town

During my last visit to Delhi, I paid a visit to a JV Co between Delhi Govt and ILFS IDFC which is monitoring bus movements on Delhi. I saw GIS based bus movement trackers on giant wall screens. Video coverage at junctions adjusts signals to optimise traffic flow. Police can even see number plates of traffic violating offenders and issue "challans" for fines. In one case, it was subsequently discovered that fake number plates were being used by someone when an owner complained on receiving the challan that he couldn't have violated traffic rule on that date as he was away from Delhi with his car!
.. I'd visited the Delhi Hub because I am thinking of having a smart traffic management system for Kolkata. Yesterday, I informed Mr Gopal Ghosh, CEO NKDA to make a project report. Here is an article that appeared in today's Anandabazar:

  1. I was in Karnataka for two years and would like to share a few things related to traffic management.
They also have CCTV monitored signals (in fact, there are websites, where people can log in and check images for a particular traffic signal); and have GPS enabled bus service. This helps both the traffic authorities and the citizens as well.

In Mysore, they had a pilot project; wherein a display board showed bus numbers due to arrive in the next few minutes; was very helpful. Buses had GPS installed in them.

In the corporate sector, Infosys Bangalore (has a fleet of more than 100 buses) had a pilot project where they had GPS enabled buses to optimise their routes.

I hope NewTown also takes inputs from these kind of best practices and implements them on need and merit.

    Regards,
    Sowmik

  2. May be it is IDFC and not ILFS sir? If so, then it is DIMTS, and they are doing a good job...one of my classmates works there as a transportation planner...

  3. Yes, Premjit, it is indeed DIMTS. So I stand corrected: it's IDFC. Please try to get any useful information from yourfriend there.

  4. The DIMTTS is essentially a part of the Delhi BRTS Project. In adidtion to the Intelligient Signalling System, it gives prioity to the Bus Service. A similar scheme is being attempted in the Kolkata BRTS Project

I see. Is there a way it can be integrated with New Town's efforts?

  6. It can be extended to the main arterial road. The WBHIDCO Buses can be nade GPRS enabled. In fact as this part of the BRTS Project will be implemented only after widening of the EM Byepass, we can actually implement a pilot project at New Town ofcourse once the funding are approved. Also considering the Arterial Road are going to be fast moving roads signalling and pedastrian management will be critical and therefore it is good idea to take up New Town. Sir as advised by you we are in touch with CEO NTKDA and shall keep you informed.
